It’s exciting that the British Ambassador’s Residence in Paris has welcomed a new work by David Hockney. The man himself is pictured here alongside his new work ‘Porcelain, Tin and Glass’ - an animated iPad painting. Before our very eyes, a vase of brightly coloured flowers takes shape - not just once, but three times. Its title refers to the materials of the three depicted vases - porcelain, tin and glass - which each catch the light in a slightly different way. Flowers have always been an important part of the still-life genre, recognisable as symbols of the fragility of life, and a subject of great interest to Hockney, used as a vehicle to experiment with new techniques. Hockney first started drawing with the iPhone in 2009 and then the iPad in 2010. The 2020 COVID pandemic accelerated his interest in the medium and the following year he began making these flower drawings whilst living in Normandy. This work was acquired by the Government Art Collection to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the British Ambassador’s Residence building in Paris and the 125th anniversary of the Government Art Collection.
