The surest sign of a decadent culture isn’t its readiness to license varieties of personal abuse and degradation, or even its elevation of immediate pleasure over long-term sobriety. The surest sign of cultural decadence is a readiness to reject as hateful what is demonstrably true.

If you want to know what a thing is, you’re inquiring about its substance. If you want to know which specific thing you’re referring to, you’re inquiring about its accidents.

Thus, the next time a humanities or social science professor steps to a podium and begins to blather about how uncertainty is a feature of the universe, and thus subjectivism is the way of all sophisticates, you may want to ask him if that means Planck’s constant isn’t constant.

Contradictory propositions do not merely go against one another. They unsay one another. They cancel one another out. The only logical way to read a writer who rejects the law of noncontradiction, who freely and openly contradicts himself, is mentally to insert the words, “or not” after each of his sentences.
