Enchantment

Everything was magical. And it seemed to go on forever. None of the pathways ended, they curved into others or circled back to the courtyard.

The instinctive rapport with an enigmatic cosmos at once both nourishing and dangerous lies at the ancient heart of all that we have come to call “the sacred.”

Enchantment is kept from reappearing because our day-to-day order is detached from the divine. The institutions and structures we live in, whether private or public, make no presumptions that they reflect God’s act—the chain of being has been broken.
