Content, Services, and Asset Businesses in the Metaverse — MatthewBall.co

Those who own these marketplaces and libraries will have huge advantages in the Metaverse era. 

 The impact of these marketplaces and stores is profound. Most obviously, a virtual world or environment can be produced much faster, more easily, and at a lower cost.

We can also consider the expansion of the creator economy. New marketplaces will emerge to commission and sell independently created virtual goods (Etsy, but for skins!), and to hire architects and artists for your digital spaces. Much of this is effectively in place today via Super Rare and OpenSea. 

I’m helping Virgil Abloh, Founder/CEO of Off-White, create exactly that kind of brand. His goals are clear, but also wide ranging: "I want to make virtual clothes to paint pictures physical clothes cannot, and let buyers access a new dimension of their personal style - no matter who they are, where they live, and the virtual worlds they love."

But crucially, the Metaverse will also lead to the establishment of many new entertainment franchises and consumer-facing brands. This is because new access technologies do more than shift how consumers access content. They change the content itself.

It’s clear that the companies that own the most beloved IP and brands will have a major role in the Metaverse, likely one that’s proportional to their relative love today.

But we do have some sense of the opportunity. There is a reason, after all, that Netflix, Spotify, and Snap all identify Fortnite as a key competitor on their earnings calls.
