Caring is an independent primary variable. You have to care first before agreeing or disagreeing can mean anything. And to do that you have to have a surplus capacity to care beyond caring about yourself, by working the “caring muscle.”

Caring personally is the antidote to both robotic professionalism and managerial arrogance. Why do I say “caring personally” instead of just “caring”? Because it’s not enough to care about the person’s work or the person’s career. Only when you actually care about the whole person with your whole self can you build a relationship.
The question of impact is my favorite. If the people doing the impacting are tired and sick and frustrated and have all these needs that are not being met, what good is that impact? The quality of work that we can do for each other depends on the quality of care that we’re experiencing and cultivating for ourselves. I can’t say that enough.
They know it is challenging, if not impossible, to focus on others if one’s own basic needs are not met first.
