Beginners

The grace to be a beginner is always the best prayer for an artist. The beginner’s humility and openness lead to exploration. Exploration leads to accomplishment. All of it begins at the beginning, with the first small and scary step.

Make the most of inexperience. A beginner has a fresh perspective. The amateurish and unprofessional are open to new ideas: they’ll try anything. They don’t know how things ‘should’ be done, and haven’t yet become entrenched in a particular method. Nothing is ‘wrong’ for them because they don’t know what is ‘right’.

In this era of “becoming,” everyone becomes a newbie. Worse, we will be newbies forever. That should keep us humble.
