Like an emissary from somewhere outside clock time, it has populated my mind with questions of porousness and response, of inside and outside, of potentiality and imminence.

We keep trying to transcend ourselves and our own interests, and yet the more the world becomes inhabited by our tools and technologies, the more unlikely it is “that man will encounter anything in the world around him that…is not, in the last analysis, he himself in a different disguise.”

How can a thing that causes so much alienation also be a source of growth and joy? How can something that estranges us from so much of the world also bring us closer to it?

If anything, I feel more stubbornly and irredeemably myself, flattened and contracted, alienated, very much alone, and something like bored.

I was proud that I was to test myself in the sternest way, that I was always to return to myself, to be my own priest, pupil, parent, child, husband, and wife….A
