I think Geoffrey West doesn't have enough neuroscience/biology background to understand that all life "cares". That's the entire point of life, as compared to non-living systems, we living organisms have goals, needs, interests, preferences, etc. Certainly humans have more complex cares, but all life cares at some level, or we wouldn't call it...
