But enlightenment, as the monk says, isn’t a point where everything stops and you’ve made it, forever surrounded by a halo of bliss. No, it is something alive, something that pushes you on every day, that calls you to return, whether you are a Daigyoman Ajari on Mount Hiei or a data-management assistant in an office in Hounslow
The problem with living in a country where you don’t speak the language is that you start to sound like a child when you’re speaking, and so people begin to treat you like a child. Then, to complete the circle, you begin to act like one.
When the police captured McVeigh, he was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Abraham Lincoln and the words “Sic Semper Tyrannis.” The same words John Wilkes Booth shouted after he assassinated Lincoln, they mean “Thus always to tyrants” and are the words attributed to Brutus after he and his supporters murdered Caesar.
Once, when they came upon a photo of the Pope blessing a group of believers, Richard’s father asked his son if he knew the difference between the Pope and his followers. And then, before Richard could answer, he said, “The difference is the hat. He is wearing a hat.”
Kipchoge’s dedication was evident. He discovered early in life that “without being self-disciplined, you cannot go anywhere,” he says.
We treat the body rigorously,” Seneca said, “so that it will not be disobedient to the mind.”

To support our objectives of developing basic aerobic fitness, training volume was quite high (20-25hrs/wk) but initially of a very low intensity (with most sessions capped at the aerobic threshold, in this case, ~50 beats below max!!)
