For us, as for Bach, it’s about glorifying God.

Work is not some post-fall aberration. Work is a blessing (1:28). Work is a gift. And work is intrinsic to the human creature because it is intrinsic to the Creator himself.

God works, and it follows that because we are made in his image (Genesis 1:26-27), we work too.

One of the great mysteries about God is that he calls us, as the church, to join with him to bring hope and healing, justice and peace, to a watching world. How will we respond to his call to be agents of shalom?

“Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does” (6:7 – 8).

In God’s economy, there is no sacred vs. secular; there is only sacred vs. sinful. Everything in heaven and earth belongs to God, and we either use the resources of the material world to glorify him or to sin against him. This is true of our work just as it is every part of our life.

The Christian understanding of agency is that all good work is a participation in the very life of God.
