For us, as for Bach, it’s about glorifying God.

Work is not some post-fall aberration. Work is a blessing (1:28). Work is a gift. And work is intrinsic to the human creature because it is intrinsic to the Creator himself.

God works, and it follows that because we are made in his image (Genesis 1:26-27), we work too.

The Bible says, “[God] has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do.”1 These “good deeds” are your service. Whenever you serve others in any way, you are actually serving God2 and fulfilling one of your purposes.

One of the great mysteries about God is that he calls us, as the church, to join with him to bring hope and healing, justice and peace, to a watching world. How will we respond to his call to be agents of shalom?

“Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does” (6:7 – 8).
