他引用这个数据统计是取自北京师范大学中国收入分配研究院两位教授万海远和孟凡强的文章，北师大课题组分层线性随机抽取了7万个代表性样本，并按比例推算覆盖了14亿总人口。
这个算法最大的问题在于7万样本中，对高收入人群的抽样比例过低，这样就很可能就低估了高收入人群的数量。
月收入超过2万的人口仅有70万，占比0.05%，这一人数似乎低到让人无法相信的程度，以至于无法解释这些年中国的房价，以及社会消费水平。
托马斯•皮凯蒂在2016年完成了第一份结合了中国税务局个人纳税数据和统计局收入数据（以及一些富豪榜），研究中国收入和财富差距的论文，并于2019年发表于顶级学术期刊《美国经济评论》，其中引用了部分来自于北师大过去的研究成果。
