Late in the month Mugs Stump crossed paths with Waterman on the upper Ruth Glacier. Stump, an alpinist of world renown who died on Denali in 1992, had just completed a difficult new route on a nearby peak, the Mooses Tooth.

• If you’re doing something absolutely bonkers… bring a camera crew.

learned how to jumar and belay effectively, while building confidence in their crampon work and climbing skills.

Above the comforts of Base Camp, the expedition in fact became an almost Calvinistic undertaking.
