"Woman" in the abstract is young, and, we assume, charming. As they get older they pass off the stage, somehow, into private ownership mostly, or out of it altogether. But these good ladies were very much on the stage, and yet any one of them might have been a grandmother.

She was Melissa’s oldest, boldest friend. They had gone to the same primary school. Hazel worked in advertising. She had a wide and glamorous smile behind which was an oft-foul tongue, and long, bouncing, half-French, half-Ghanaian curls falling down her back, the most beautiful, the most envied of their schoolgirl pack, the one the boys always

old beyond time. She is an archivist of feminine intention. She preserves female tradition.

The modern woman is a blur of activity. She is pressured to be all things to all people. The old knowing is long overdue.

She is not lazy, but she also doesn’t waste her precious energy and resources running all around the uterus looking for the sperm or worrying about whether or not it’s coming.
