The rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky led the Soviet Union’s rocket program in the 1920s, and is still recognized as a pioneer of astronautics. He had an oddly mystical bent. He believed that the universe created itself “so that atoms could experience joy.”

Wehrner Von Braun's autobiography was titled "I Aim for the Stars". Satirist Mort Sahl suggested he subtitle it "Only Sometimes I Hit London".
