What’s “believable” has changed, and what we have always believed has been challenged. In response to this, some are eager to offer “updated” versions of Christian faith, revisionist versions of the gospel that are more acceptable, less scandalous—more relevant and less offensive.

Is it really at all surprising that a 'history' of the origin of Christianity created by an employee in the service of Roman tyrant should turn out to be a pack of lies?

Within the church, the challenge of the skeptics put the church on the defensive. Was Jesus really divine? The eighteenth-century church was concerned to prove that he was. This resulted in a reading of the gospels looking for the wrong thing.
