Standing in the background is the great fourteenth-century Nyingma scholar and yogin Longchenpa, who, for the first time, brought together the various doctrines and practices of the Ancient School into one grand and comprehensive synthesis.

Naropa transmitted his lineage to Marpa (1012–1096), a Tibetan householder who had come to India in search of the dharma. Naropa

suddenly gained an understanding of all teachings, the ability to see things as they really are and not how others see them, how to examine things with his own wisdom while remaining free from discursive views, and all the abilities of a great yogin38 no longer dependent on others:
