The following illustrations were made by the Danish artist Kay Nielsen (1886-1957). The illustrations were made for the book East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North. It is a collection of ancient fairytales. And for many of the fairy tales different versions exist across cultures as these stories have been locally adapted over time, Nielsen made about 25 color illustrations for this book, during a time when luxurious books with color illustrations were in high demand.

introduced to art by his uncle, Roald Dahl, who used to take him gallery hopping in London’s Cork Street in the 1950s. The first American whom Logsdail ever met was Walt Disney, who had come to their English country house to buy the rights to Dahl’s Gremlins.
