to God you shall all return; then He will make clear to you about what you have been disputing.

If your Lord had so willed, He could have made mankind one people: but they will not cease to dispute,

It is a promise binding on Him in the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran, and who is truer to his promise than God? Rejoice then in the bargain you have made. That is the supreme achievement.

If it had been your Lord’s Will, they would all have believed,—all who are on earth! Will you then compel mankind, against their will, to believe!

‘That is not well. These men follow desire and come to emptiness. Thou must not be of their sort.’

Islam preaches the continual self-revelation of God from Adam down to all the prophets who have ever existed in all religions. These prophets are called nabis in Arabic, and they have been chosen to relay God’s divine message to all humanity. But sometimes a nabi is given the extra burden of handing down sacred texts: Moses, who revealed the Torah;

To such (deceit) let the hearts of those incline, who have no faith in the Hereafter: let them delight in it, and let them earn from it what they may.

Should you encounter them in war, then deal with them in such a manner that those that follow them should abandon their designs and may take warning. 58 And if you learn of treachery on the part of any people, throw their treaty back at them, so as to be on equal terms, for God does not love the treacherous.
