Sublime

Even the darkness seemed more alive to me, surrounding me like something physical. I can’t even say it was a sinister presence.

Each with a job title written on the front. Each, as it turned out, filled with writing. Many, many more than could possibly have been filed by only twelve expeditions.

Tyrena Wingreen-Feif was my first editor at Transline. It was her idea to title the book The Dying Earth (a records search showed a novel by that name five hundred years earlier, but the copyright had lapsed and the book was out of print).

This premonition of violence made little rational sense, and yet it came to me too easily, almost as if placed in my mind by outside forces.

I lay awake in my tent for a while trying to turn the tower into a tunnel, or even a shaft, but with no success. Instead, my mind kept returning to a question: What lies hidden at its base?
