Jerome’s very laidback – he does meditation and likes being outdoors. It was funny to see him playing someone so different from the life I imagined he led.

Charlie Brooker: Arquette was always written to seem sympathetic, but in my original version he was probably a bit more stuffy, or more of an old-school psychologist. Michael Kelly brought a lot to the role. He’s very good at doing likeable warm menace!

And Jimmi Simpson so skilfully navigated his character Walton through the comedy of the early scenes, where he’s the jerk CEO in the office, through the fear of being Daly’s plaything on the spaceship to then breaking our hearts by sacrificing himself at the end. The cast were wonderful. It was great fun.
