find it far more valuable to always think of my characters in flux. I don’t say, “What kind of person is he?” and then try to put tags on him. Instead, I ask, “What is he becoming?”

Pete is his perfect foil. While Marlin’s reality is rooted in fear, Pete has an unshakable core of strength that keeps him grounded. His character is loosely based on a friend of mine, who also share’s Pete’s heart of gold and deep sense of loyalty.
