4 The First Track

Another roar. This land is the keeper of my family’s stories. Londolozi Game Reserve, the name derived from the Zulu for “protector of all living things.” The presence of lions in my life is like an echo that always rings through to the core of my heart. The farther from home I go, the louder it calls.

On my lost trail, possibilities I had never considered opened up. A childhood in the bush and a life around campfire stories became an unexpected asset in ceremonial spaces around America. My lost track turned to first tracks and then trails.

The art of the way the tracker sees is the way he can look at the thing he has seen a thousand times and always see something new.

We didn’t go out and get these jobs; we created them out of following the inner trail. We kept making our lives as trackers.
