adult children seek to control others and ward off potentially shaming or abandoning situations.

We either become alcoholics,

Adults from divorced homes understand shame and confusion and also identify in ACA.

We judge ourselves harshly and have a very low sense of self-esteem.

In ACA, we believe we were born whole and became fragmented in body, mind, and spirit through abandonment and shame. We need help finding a way to return to our miracle state.

We unintentionally passed on our family insanity or distorted thinking.

We became addicted to excitement.

The Higher Power is patient as it seeks to help the adult child find wholeness and integration of a divided self.

We stop believing we have no worth and start to see our true identity, reflected in the eyes of other Adult Children, as the strong survivors and valuable people we actually are.
