Now imagine a world in which this was not only a system-level setting, but an API as well. So all those services that already do this — the Kindles of the world, but also the Pockets, Instapapers, and Mediums — could tap into this functionality as well to further augment it. Hell, maybe even Microsoft Word and Google Docs and the like.
This is anything but an argument against technology, were such a thing even coherent. It’s an argument for taking technology as seriously as it deserves to be taken, for recognizing, as McLuhan’s friend and colleague John M. Culkin put it, “we shape our tools, and thereafter, they shape us.”

Even if we could resolve payment's friction issues, however, we would still be stuck with the basic problem that some people have much more disposable income than others. Universal basic income would help, and I'm strongly in favor of it, but I don't think that's likely to be politically feasible anytime soon.
