You can build a very very powerful force in your business model and to other people’s business models if you are the first step in dishing out who gets the attention after you.

We think people want to hear about exciting stuff we did without them (“I went to Budapest!”) when they actually are happier talking about mundane stuff we did together (“Remember when we got stuck in traffic driving to DC?”).

The challenge then becomes raise enough money and keep morale high enough for long enough so that you actually have the time to make it work. Hence the job of the CEO – the momentum creator.

A distinction that I draw is if the value of the incumbent can actually be replaced by a technology product rather than a technology-enabled product.
