I.
The first is that our life has a transcendent aim which lives outside of the present moment. Our calling is the road we need to take to reach it. Whilst the hobby exists for the moment, the calling lives beyond the moment and requires a lifetime to be concluded. For example Quentin Tarantino wanting to make 10 films and then finishing his film career.
II.
The second is that the calling serves the world, not just the individual. We can think about Kendrick Lamar releasing an album that takes fans to new sonic spaces. This interaction with the self, the work and the “other” is inseparable from the calling whereas hobbies are not in service of the “other”.

Finally a life of meaning cannot exist without a calling—the spirit struggles to sustain itself without one. Hobbies however do not sustain the foundation of life, they enrich it. Because although Leonora Carrington loved to cook, take her art away and the life withers. But add cooking into a life where art rests as at the foundation and her life turns lush.
