“The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits.” This perspective became dogma. Most business school curricula are built on that foundational premise. But it is a deeply flawed premise, and has caused massive, unnecessary suffering to people and the planet.
Choosing between caring for others and self-interest is like choosing between breathing in and breathing out. Think of inhaling as taking in something from the world. Think of exhaling as giving back something to the world. We breathe in oxygen, which trees breathe out. We breathe out carbon dioxide, which the trees breathe in.
