I’m having trouble understanding if we’re “forcing” a middle tier. If we are, then that doesn’t feel right.
So how do I come up with three tiers?

What amazes me is the lack of understanding that a measuring device is another layer between what you see and want to measure. Sure it can be insightful to measure things and understand what they are but the more complex that gets, you're adding more layers to it, essentially widening the gap between you and the thing in question
Maybe my “Build-a-lex” collection should go into my Anki. God knows that needs some work.
