There’s something deeply satisfying about doing a great job, to the best of your ability. No matter whether you’re a solo entrepreneur, or at a hot startup, or massive company. Entry level or VP. The first recognition has to come from yourself.
It’s almost impossible to safely drive a car while only looking in the rear view mirror. Only seeing where you’ve been is a terrible way to figure out where to go.
But it’s really unsafe to go forward with no idea of what came before.

Control and surrender have to be kept in balance. That’s what surfers do—take control of the situation, then be carried, then take control. In the last few thousand years, we’ve become incredibly adept technically. We’ve treasured the controlling part of ourselves and neglected the surrendering part.
