The region-beta paradox describes the phenomenon whereby, sometimes, a person may benefit from being worse off versus just mildly off, because being worse off may mobilize them to take action to address the problem, whereas being mildly off can lead them to stagnancy.

nothing really to gain from this article, just very interesting, and i had no idea that there were even mentions let alone prototypes of solar energy like this as early as the 1880s. also hilarious that at the time, they said it wouldn't be commercially viable for some of the same challenges we face today: energy storage.
also cool that this all happened on Nassau and Maiden Lane, just a few blocks from my apartment — “FiDi”, as we call it now, is the epitome of Lower Manhattan, as it should be called, and it's a beautiful place, with massively rich history
