Making Things As A Subversion Of Neoliberalism

I watched this really thought-provoking video:

that details all the ways which knitting or making things subverts neoliberalism. It got me thinking about my own connection to sustainability and slowness and agency.

I think it's very interesting how Virginia L. Lewis (the person who made the video) connects social media addiction (something the tech elites want) as a form of enclosure of the mind to how making things slowly, deliberately and sustainably really disrupts that. When we are crafting things we are not on our phones, we are using our hands to create not consume and not make any tech bro elite any richer.

Virginia also talks about knitting as a connection to ancestors that fast fashion could never. Knitting and using old patterns and old motifs is an activity our ancestors did and some of the patterns are from their time, some of the craft is from their time, their labours. This is a beautiful way to look at making, after all our ancestors too were writers, gardeners, metal workers, seamstresses, knitters, spinners, weavers and artists.

God damn this video made me want to make something.
