The problem with quantifying everything is that we can’t ever rest. Our end state is a growth state — a philosophy that defines corporate America boardrooms and shouldn’t inhabit our bedrooms or morning coffee. As I wrote last week:

How much I revelled in the cappuccino foam, how much higher the standard of olive oil was in even simple restaurants, the combination of my 4 euro Misto aperitivo and free, salted peanuts. The father holding his sleeping baby without a pram out on the terminal tarmac as the sun was setting behind the mountains. Valentina loving storms because her father has invented a story about a viking king wanting to crack nuts whenever it thundered.
