Poetry

“Franz Marc’s Blue Horses” by Mary Oliver.
I love this line:
“Maybe the desire to make something beautiful is the piece of God that is inside each of us.”
For me, this poem is a lot about letting things be, without trying to intellectualize or to over-explain. It’s about presence, and allowing beauty to be enough. And in the face of war, or conflict, it’s important to continue creating beauty and art.
“I have refused to live
locked in the orderly house of
reasons and proofs.
The world I live in and believe in
is wider than that. And anyway,
what’s wrong with Maybe?
You wouldn’t believe what once or
twice I have seen. I’ll just
tell you this:
only if there are angels in your head will you ever, possibly, see one.”
- Mary Oliver
I love the way that Mary Oliver reminds us to retain our sense of wonder, arguing subtly, that it leads to more expansive, magical reality. A wild-running imagination, that is not limited by rigid thinking, can lead to beautiful discoveries. Stay open to life’s infinite possibilities. You don’t know what you don’t know.
