Nel novembre 1967 il diciannovenne e appassionato di fantasy Terry Pratchett scrisse al settantacinquenne J.R.R. Tolkien una lettera di apprezzamento per il racconto Il fabbro di Wootton Major appena pubblicato.
Dissi solo che mi piacque molto il libro. E lui rispose grazie.

Tolkien, che non aveva ancora ricevuto lettere d’opinioni dei lettori a riguardo, fu felice di rispondere al suo giovane ammiratore Terence.
Nella lettera a Tolkien, Pratchett menziona di aver letto per la prima volta Il Signore degli Anelli un Natale di tanti anni prima. Aveva tredici anni all’epoca e lesse il volume in venticinque ore, con la velocità di chi scopre qualcosa di nuovo e irresistibile: «That book was half brick in the path of the bicycle of my life».
Dopo Tolkien tutto cambiò. In positivo, ma anche in negativo, perché i libri fantasy erano pochi e quelli ben scritti ancora meno. Per rivivere l’esperienza del Signore degli Anelli, Pratchett provò a leggere Le Cronache di Narnia: «fu come fare indigestione di ostie della comunione».
