The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon was published 249 years ago today, in 1776.

Science tends to look at things from the outside. It does this in a ‘action-reaction’ or ‘idea-result’ kind of way. But if you really connect with what you’re trying to solve you can be in dialogue with its context. You can base your solutions onto intentions and principles and make sure that your actions have the right impact and consequences.
As an example: the people that invented plastics where not really connected to what they were developing in a broader (earthly) context. They had a idea and that lead to a result. But they didn’t base what they were creating upon life’s principles. Otherwise they would’ve create a product that could’ve been brought back to it’s originating state and didn’t tax the environment.
