I think the McLuhan-esque take is to say that Fandoms are themselves voluntary culture-war militias recruited from the general population.
An argument could be made that groups like Antifa, BLM, Proud Boys, Patriot Front, etc... are in essence fandom para-military orgs with $$$.
The Creator Economy - is starting its transition to the Community Economy.
The Community Economy β enabled by cryptonetworks and social tokens β incentivizes early followers to use their underutilized skills and assets to support a community or individual.

In the new cultural economy, the culture is the product. It is composed of practices, ideas, and discourses. Products are auxiliary, supportive, but not the main event. And most importantly, people now opt into these designed cultures with full knowledge and awareness that these cultures might change who they are.
