I think the advice-giver meant to say, “Never quit something with great long-term potential just because you can’t deal with the stress of the moment.” Now that’s good advice.
Had I been emotionally attached to my short-term results, I never would have made it. But I believed in the book and knew that it would change people’s lives, so I stuck to my process and remained focused on the big picture. Ultimately, my commitment to my process paid off.
Playing the long game—eschewing short-term gratification in order to work toward an uncertain but worthy future goal—isn’t easy. But it’s the surest path to meaningful and lasting success in a world that so often prioritizes what’s easy, quick, and ultimately shallow.
