There is a Tibetan form of spiritual hyperstition that is more powerful than any of the modern day forms. It works by living and believing as if you have already awakened to the ultimate truth of reality. Tibetan Buddhists mastered this technique hundreds of years ago. In their “pure vision” practice, they spend all day everyday playing the role of an awakened being. They imagine that they have bodies of light, that their thoughts are mantras and that the world is a pure land inhabited exclusively by awakened beings. They imagine that every person they meet is a Buddha. They call this “using the fruit as the path” because they find that by envisioning this reality, they slowly start to recognize that it is already so. This is the twist on Tibetan hyperstition: They are not trying to make their desired future real by believing in it. They are believing in it in order to help recognize that it is already the truth here and now. That we are all Buddhas living in a Pure Land of love and wisdom here and now in the present. Instead of trying to dream paradise into existence, they try to recognize that we are already living in it. One by one, as they wake up, their job is not to rally others to create a beautiful future. Their job is to awaken others to their he beauty of the present.
