Christianity, and every other belief system more broadly, has come to an impasse in the postmodern period. Following the critiques of Nietzsche and other great thinkers, we've realized that there are ultimately limits to strict rationality and formalized, legible belief systems. For Christianity in particular there is a metamorphosis happening where more and more Christians in the modern world are adopting a different stance towards their faith compared to the popular mode of propositional, legalistic, black and white thinking that has characterized a lot of Christianity the past few centuries. This new version of Christianity is more comfortable with paradox and mystery. There is less of a focus on reflexive fear and hatred towards those who do not share christian beliefs. Intellectual tribalism is increasingly being replaced amongst these new Christians with a focus on the heart. Crucially, a consensus seems to be growing that the previous ideas of their being One True Christian Church are obviously false given the increasing access we have to historical information. An honest look at christian history shows that every church has been filled with corruption and depravity at various points. there's a sense that we need more creativity and openness in our theology, that Christ planted a seed by bringing His Gospel down to earth and that seed is still growing into the fullness of the tree of life. The kingdom of heaven is still slowly being spread out upon all the earth. There are many different names and monikers for this phenomenon. Some have called it mystical Christianity, vibes-based Christianity, heart-oriented Christianity, Kegan 5 Christianity, post-rational Christianity, etc. In a broader sense, we are realizing in the modern area that strict rationality on it's own is not enough to hold our societies and cultures together. However, pure chaos obviously does not work either. We need a dialectic between order and chaos, form and emptiness, structure and flexibility, that allows us to gain the benefits of modernity while throwing off the overly tight shackles we have placed upon ourselves. Many deep thinkers in the postmodern era are exploring these ideas more deeply. If you're curious to dive in I recommend looking at the older works of Jordan Peterson, and the writings of David Chapman. Ultimately however, the best thing you can do if you are interested to go deeper here is work on your own personal connection with God. Practice contemplative prayer, meditation, fasting, and generally test the limits of your own conscious awareness. If you do so faithfully, I fully believe that over time God will reveal Himself to you, and that He will carry us through the confusions and difficulties of this time into a better era, where we can grow our spirits, flourish, and learn to love one another more deeply.
