Europe remains the main tourist destination, accounting for half of the total arrivals—with France, Spain, and Italy being the continent’s most visited countries. For generations the US led overall tourist expenditures, but it was surpassed by China in 2012 and five years later Chinese tourists were spending twice as much as Americans.
Spending on foreign travel had amounted to $2.2bn in 2003. By 2008 Brazilians were spending $10.9bn on trips abroad, and by 2013, $25bn.
