The world lost a good one last Friday. My grandpa Ed was stronger than an ox, the best euchre player you’d ever play with, and had a wry smile and Appalachian-foothills-meets-Detroit sense of humor that I’ll really miss. . In euchre if he called up trump on a long shot he’d say (in his voice that legitimately sounded exactly like Boomhauer from King Of The Hill voice), “Columbus took a chance and he discovered Ohio!” He also was fond of calling clubs “puppy paws” and spades “shovels”. . I remember when I was about 16 and he took me to one of his 13 brother’s and sister’s private property in Tennessee. We scaled (more like slid) down a ridiculously steep hillside until we got to the bottom of the holler. We proceeded to shoot random beer cans and such with the shotguns we carried down with us. Then on the climb back out my dad and I legitimately bonked, and my grandpa was waiting for us at the top egging us on. . Also, he would only dance to Bob Seger. He liked that old time rock and roll. . I wish I could’ve gotten to know him more. In many ways our lives seemed like quantum leaps away. He only went through 8th grade, but his street smarts were something that my master’s degreed self could learn a lot from. . Love you, Papa. ♥️
