instagram.comGrowing basil at home is easy and rewarding! Here are some tips to ensure a healthy basil plant: 1. Choose the Right Spot: Place basil in a location with 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. A sunny windowsill or balcony works great. If growing indoors without enough sunlight, consider using a grow light. 2. Use Good Soil: Basil thrives in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Use a mix of potting soil and compost for the best results. 3. Planting Tips: Plant basil seeds or seedlings in a pot with drainage holes. Keep seeds lightly covered with soil and water gently. They will germinate in 5-10 days. 4. Watering: Water basil regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Avoid wetting the leaves directly to prevent mold or disease. 5. Pruning for Growth: Pinch off the top leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. Remove flower buds to extend the plant’s life and improve flavor. 6. Fertilizing: Feed basil with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks for continuous growth. 7. Harvesting: Begin harvesting once the plant has 6-8 leaves. Pick leaves from the top, not the bottom, to promote new growth. 8. Temperature Matters: Basil is sensitive to cold. Keep it in temperatures between 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F). By following these tips, you'll have a thriving basil plant for cooking and garnishing!
instagram.comToday we are back and I am showing you from start to finish how anyone can grow more basil than you will know what to do with, and it all starts with just a couple of cheap plants from the supermarket. I adore growing fresh herbs and basil has to be one of my favourites. It pairs so well with crops such as tomatoes, and it really is the taste of the summer. I love to add it to fresh tomatoes, use it in my pasta sauce, or make delicious fresh pesto, and with a few quick tips, you can easily grow more than you will know what to do with. Now when you buy basil from the shops, you are usually getting more than you bargained for. They cram loads of individual basil plants in one small pot, which is usually why they die. Instead gently separate out into smaller clusters and pot out into larger pots, which often you can get 20 or more clusters from two small pots. As they grow keep harvesting the tips, above a side shoot, which will allow your plant to keep growing and growing, giving you a far larger and healthier basil plant. As they are annuals they will die off at the end of the year, but you can take a few cuttings to grow on, over winter inside to repeat the process the following spring. Thank you so much for watching, I love you all, Joe 😊🌱💚 #basil #gardening #gardentips #zerowaste #harvest
