It might seem illogical, but the exposure compensation dial is enabled when you set the ISO to [ISO AUTO]. When you do this, you can alter the recommended exposure by turning the exposure compensation dial, which in turn alters the ISO setting. In contrast, the dial is inactive if you set the ISO to a fixed value.
