The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)

Humble estimation of oneself before God
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
- He who is too sure in time of peace will often become depressed or fearful in time of war. If you knew how to be consistently humble and modest in your own estimation and could regulate and direct your spirit well, you would not so easily fall into danger and sin.
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
It is far better to know little and be humble than to possess great wisdom with complacency. It is better for you to have less than to have a lot, with the danger of becoming proud.
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
One is not as prudent as he should be if he lets himself rejoice while forgetting his former poverty, or the fear of God that he might lose the grace he has gained. Neither does one exhibit much virtue if in some trial or affliction he gives up hope and shows less confidence in me than he should.
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
Those who believe themselves wise rarely are humble enough to allow themselves to be guided by others.
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
- There are many who grow impatient or become lazy when they do not meet success immediately. However, we do not always have control over our lives (see Jer 10:23). This is up to God, and God will send consolation when he wants, as much as he wants, and to whomever he wants as it pleases him, and nothing more.

Chapter 5 Wonderful effects of God’s love
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
We are always before God who watches our progress with love. Knowing that God is not pleased by pride and insincerity, let us conduct our lives in humility and simplicity, with truth and sincerity. Let us pray to God not only with our lips but also with our mind, will, and heart.
Thomas à Kempis • The Imitation of Christ: (Original translation as heard on the Hallow App)
- Fear God’s judgment and be in awe of the anger of the Almighty. Do not presume to be able to discuss the works of the Most High, but rather examine your own failings: How many times you have sinned, and how many good things you have neglected to do.
