Remix Culture: Jumpstarting Creativity

By making it easy to remix existing content, TikTok reduces the friction to create new content. This is what I call Open Source Content — breaking out individual components of a piece of content and using them as entry points for viewers to create new content.

Especially on TikTok, there’s so much remix meme culture. It’s not necessarily 100 percent original. And maybe that’s part of why it’s so hard to translate [TikTok content] to YouTube: for the most part you have to come up with something completely original.
