What is the best strategy to find a relatively inexpensive cabin?

I know that that is a dumb question in this day and age, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is there any secret to finding a nice small cabin on a decent chunk of land without it costing $500,000? How did you find your cabin? Was it via Zillow, a realtor, etc. Is it better to buy the land and then build? Teach me your ways.
