"But How Do You Read So Much?"
don’t know how else to explain it except to say that when I make time to read, my capacity to deal with my own life — and my own bullshit — expands . My natural tendency to be tightly wound loosens its grip.
Reading as a default state
I don’t read because I’m trying to be a more intelligent, interesting, virtuous person—though books are sometimes helpful in cultivating those traits! Instead, I read because it’s one of the most enjoyable things I could be doing with my attention. An evening alone with a book is restorative and rewarding; an evening alone with my phone, less so.
