I didn’t want a bridge to connect to others. I wanted a fortress to keep them out. Performing would draw unnecessary attention to me and it would expose my interest in secrecy. If people knew I was capable of keeping secrets, they might wonder what else I was hiding; I wasn’t willing to risk being exposed.
