They were casting their questions into Grail, over and over, and nothing was coming back. Like coins down a wishing well.

Every place, every name, became part of an ever-expanding filter. Then, every morning, I went through everything I could get my hands on—long ropes of news, starling flocks of status updates, the confetti of stock prices—looking for familiar faces.

Scheme didn’t like drawers or cabinets. “I need to be able to see what I have,” she explained. “I need to be able to make connections.”
