This was my first exposure to the idea that one should have a system instead of a goal. The system was to continually look for better options.
All I’m suggesting is that thinking of goals and systems as very different concepts has power. Goal-oriented people exist in a state of continuous presuccess failure at best, and permanent failure at worst if things never work out. Systems people succeed every time they apply their systems, in the sense that they did what they intended to do.
P: Hmmm, so you weren’t kidding when you said earlier that everything is a system, and my world is simply full of systems that either work or don’t, and we can always slow down to find the system that isn’t working and replace it with one that is.
A systems-first mentality provides the antidote. When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running
